Scotland Outdoors

It is all gloom and today today with the World's Stock Markets - it appears to be in free fall so after reading this depressing news on the BBC website I noticed photographs of mushrooms in Scotland that was being featured on Landward (which I missed) however I did discover another aspect of the huge BBC website, namely Scotland Outdoors - full of photographs and information on Scotland.

Mushrooms

A quick post so that I don't forget to add a link to a website I discovered on mushrooms, namely Rogers Mushrooms - a truly useful site for everyone interested in wild mushrooms and collection mushrooms for food.
I must admitt that I love collecting wild mushrooms, yet I am always worried about picking the wrong species and making myself (and others) ill, so I tend to stick to mushrooms that are easily identified as good for food.
Having a good book with lots of pictures does help and you can buy the Rogers Mushrooms book from Amazon - Wildlife and Nature Books aStore - Rogers Mushrooms or simply browse the section on mushrooms for many other books on the subject.

Castle of Mey

The Castle of Mey is Scotland's most northerly castle and was renovated by the Queen Mother after the death of her husband. Since then it has been lovingly restored and rebuilt and is now open to the public at certain times of the year when Prince Charles, who inherted the castle after his grandmothers death.

The Castle and walled gardens are definately worth a visit and we enjoyed looking around the gardens. My wife and her friends also went into the castle and loved it.

The castle also has a small animal centre where kids of all ages will love to see the animals, chickens, rare sheep breeds, ducks, pigs as well as smaller domestic animals are looked after. The centre has information on rare breeds and photographs. Children love this part of the castle and from the comments I heard from other "adult" visitors, parents and older people will also enjoy seeing the animals.

After you have walked around the gardens, visited the Castle of Mey and spent some time at the animal park you will be ready for a coffee, snack or lunch and the Castle of Mey Shop and visitor centre is the place to go, excellent coffee and great food.

I have put some pictures as well as a location map for the Castle of Mey on our website.

Visit the Castle of Mey in Caithness and you will enjoy every minute.

Caithness Beaches

Scotland Beaches
Caithness is known for fabulous fishing in the many lochs, for sea fishing and for the many beautiful beaches. We just love this area of Scotland and are discovering the many beautiful and empty beaches where dogs are welcome. Our dogs certainly love visting the beach as you can see below.

Sam and Charlie on Keiss Beach overlooking Sinclairs Bay, 5 miles from Wick in Caithness.
This beach is now on our weekly walks, and for Charlie (our girl collie) it is a great place to run after her ball - for Sam (our oldest pal) he loves paddling about in the water.
